So Much For That of the Day: Disney’s Joy Division-inspired Mickey tee is no more.
Despite tickling band co-founder Peter Hook’s compliment bone, the company decided to yank the questionable homage after their cool uncle told them what Joy Division actually is.
“As soon as we became aware there could be an issue, we pulled it from our shelves and our online store to review the situation further,” a rep is quoted as saying.
Not to worry, there are plenty of kind souls on eBay who will be more than happy to part ways with this suddenly limited tee for a measly $202.50 and counting.

DAMNIT I knew I should have got one!!!

I don’t get the mock outrage a lot of people have had over the shirt, or the Threadless mashup that uses the pattern to make an image of the NY skyline. Most of the objections seem to surface on the fact that the commercialisation of the cover for Unknown Pleasures would offend Ian Curtis and is a smear on the band’s legacy. This annoys me as it’s so easy to take a viewpoint that something would have offended someone who is actually dead. What about Peter Saville who actually designed the cover, or even the fact that the image is simply something that was taken from a scientific reference book? The currency of the internet is mashups and remixes; yes sometimes they are fairly crass and cheap but that’s the way of the world. It’s not worth getting bent out of shape for.
